Student Tips for Portfolio Success

March 17, 2017

We have completed Week 10, and it is almost time for students to submit the portfolio projects they have been working on all semester. To help students prepare, we have collected student tips for completing portfolios successfully!

  1. Read the instructions. Even if your professor went over the instructions, re-read them because you need to follow all the rules in them, including the minimum number of pages and paragraphs as well as required numbers of sources, quotations, and paraphrases.
  2. Print your sources when you find them. If you plan to use it, print it immediately!
  3. Stay up to date! Procrastination is not your friend because the portfolio has a lot of pieces.
  4. Cite your sources as you write. Don’t wait until later. When in doubt, it is always better to cite a source than to not have enough citation.
  5. Write an extra draft and visit the ARC! Someone other than your professor grades this project, so it never hurts to get a second opinion. Make an appointment to see an English professor to review any portfolio you are completing.
  6. Double check your Works Cited page for MLA 8th edition style. MLA changed last year, so be certain you are using the most up-to-date guidelines.
  7. Revise and edit carefully for your final draft. Go over any drafts your professor reviewed and be sure you have incorporated all of his or her comments.
  8. If you are taking LL254, prepare for the portfolio timed writing, which is worth 18 points of your portfolio. Timed writings make a lot of people nervous, so read the article more than once to prepare. Arrive early to class that day, and bring extra pens or pencils.
